The Tla'amin-SFU Heritage and Archaeology Project
1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver
Prior to the initiation of this collaborative project some five years ago, there had been little archaeological research conducted in the Northern Coast Salish region. Since that time, our team has located, mapped, and tested a large number of sites from south of Powell River to north of Desolation Sound and have compiled some of the vast knowledge held by community members about the region's deep past. We are currently focusing our efforts on mapping intertidal features, sampling associated middens, mapping and dating settlements, and excavating one of the major settlements in the region. Though it sometimes seems that our explorations have created more questions than answers, we are beginning to understand the region's diverse archaeological record and some of the many ways the Tla'amin ancestors lived.
